more Alla Prima

Here's an alla prima painting I did a couple days ago. I'm pretty stoked on it, especially when compared to the last one I did, which Autumn saw... but the rest of the world will not ;) 18"x24" oil on canvas board.

Return of the Black Viking

Stage 2. It went through a few phases and lost a lot of its initial energy along the way.
Client loves it. Me, not so much. Parts of it I am happy with, but not the overall feeling. it feels a little stylistically inconsistent.
I Will have one more chance to get it right though.
Open for suggestions as always.

Speedies #2

Here are a couple more speedies... I'm just trying some slightly different techniques with each one to find some new things I might like. I left a little more process showing in these, just for the hell of it. I didn't really want to "finish" them completely as per conversations Autumn and I have been having. Figure I should start really treating digital art a bit more like I would oils. Good times ;)

Speedies

These are a couple of speed paintings I did last night from reference... obviously. 40 minutes apiece. The first was just a basic round brush starting very soft and getting more sharp as I focused in with some noise thrown on for the hell of it... and the second was Photoshop's oil pastel brush. Thought I'd share.

Dawn of the black viking

cover art for an album that will be released later this spring. So I needs to get it done asap and I´m Only the first draft still.
I will probably work in more of the actual photo it was drawn from as most people are so awfully impressed by realism these days.

The plan is also to alter the lighting from its current somber, apocalyptic twilight into a more a more inspiring (yet still somewhat apocalyptic) dawn. If any of you digi-paint pros have some constructive input on how to acomplish this, please dont be shy.

"Nox Custos" reprise

Well I'm calling it done. I thought about adding some little glowing glowies, like Will-o'-the-Wisps and things, but they started to compete for attention. I could have made them work if I wanted to spend the rest of my nights this week working it all out, but I don't so I won't. I'm stoked on this image though. I learned a lot doing it, among which was an added layer to my patience. Hope y'all dig it too.

Cheers,
~d

Rawhide Sunset

Hiya kids!
Haven't posted here in a spell, so I thought I'd drop something off. I've been toying with ideas for posters for "Rawhide Tayler", and this is the idea I began working up tonight. Hopefully I'll have it complete by tomorrow afternoon/evening, or at least ready for crits ;) She looked too tall in the thumb, so I had to shorten her in the actual drawing. She's not supposed to be a tall girl in the story. 5'5" max. A badass little wingnut.
Also, you won't usually see me rendering to this degree in pencils, but I wanted them to do the work in the values, mostly for the texture, and the colors will be done in PS...

Cheers,
~d

P.S. I have some more sketches on my blog if you're interested...

I'm putting it in The Hive show this weekend.
p.s. the dress looks flat now that i look at it from far away....I've lost my focus in the colors rather than the values when i did it....

"Rawhide" (extreme!)

Last night I was pretty much fried, so of course it looked finished. However, I've come to the conclusion that good Art is about the few extra steps that nobody wants to take. I sure as hell didn't want to create my own Paisley pattern, but I figured I could use it later on, so it's worth it. It adds some texture and depth to the piece I think, and starts to give some style and funk, and I'm all about the style and funk. Let me know what y'all think...

Cheers,

added bg....

okay i gave her a minimal bg, i agree with daniel that pin-up is usually very simple on the background. autumn mentioned rain drops, since her pose looks like she's sheltering from the rain. so after a few try i settled on this super simple one.
does it work?

"Rawhide"

Well everyone else has been posting girls, so I felt left out. This is a character I've been developing for a while now. She's gone through every color and change possible including genre, and this is where I've finally settled with her. I've started writing a short story of one of her escapades, though that's a light way of describing what she goes through, and I will also be starting a short comic of another of her journeys. So this is Dakota "Rawhide" Tayler, called Kody by her friends, and "Rawhide" or "Rawhide" Tayler by everyone else...

Cheers,
~d
